How can I help my child?

Talking

Talking to your child is one of the best ways to help and support them. Most children will answer the question "What did you do at school today?" with "Nothing" or "I can't remember" or the question "How was your day?" with "Fine". Questions like some of these examples are more likely to generate an answer:

What did you learn today that you didn't know before?

What word did your teacher say the most today?

What did you today that made your brain work hard?

Who said something funny today?

What did you play at lunchtime?

Did anything surprise you today?

Learning Help

It is really important for children to read aloud on a regular basis. All children bring books home from school. Initially, we ask that they read these with an adult. Even when they are older, it is a huge benefit for them to read to others. There are lots of opportunities you can use to incorporate reading into everyday life, e.g. reading a book to a younger sibling, reading recipes or instructions, helping to plan a route, doing the supermarket shopping.

There are some resources below to help parents and carers support their children. Please speak to your child's class teacher if you have any questions or would like further guidance.

Knowing times tables is crucial for being able to understand many aspects of maths. Children need to learn  and know all of the times tables facts up to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4.

These websites will help your child to learn and practise their times tables.
